Can I upgrade my laptop’s processor and memory?

12 May

Hi! I have a MSI VR300 laptop that I got as my birthday present. I want to upgrade its processor from Pentium Dual Core to Core 2 Duo and its memory from 767 MB to 1 GB. Is that possible? And how much would it cost to do that?
I heard that laptops have limits for memory. How do I know my MSI VR300’s limit?

You can upgrade the memory by replacing the internal drive, or buying an external drive. There is no way of upgrading the processor though.

the only thing on it that can be upgraded (most likely) is the RAM
take my laptop for instance, it has 2GB of ram standard but its upgradeable to 4GB ‘WITHOUT VOIDING THE WARRANTY’

srsly, dont do anything which will void the warranty

The first answer was wrong you can’t increase memory by replacing a hard drive. A hard drive is storage, not memory. Memory is used by programs to address the processor. It is just a chip and yes you can replace it with something larger, not necessarily faster. Larger is better though. the more RAM you have the better your computer operates. As far as the processor is concerned you are best off to stay with what you have. You can possibly upgrade if your motherboard supports a faster bus speed, but most likely it was built with the correct speed processor in the first place.

You really should just buy a new laptop. You can get one with better specs for $400. Plus it has 1 GB of ram, it says 767 because some of it is dedicated to the video card. Check also to see if there are slots left for RAM if you want to upgrade.

Laptops (notebooks) are not made to upgrade, because each model is built unique with its specification. The only two hardware that you can upgrade in a notebook are the RAM and HDD (hard drive). It may, may, may be possible to upgrade the CPU, but I highly doubt it. You should call the manufacturer and ask.

In the mean time, read through this: http://www.ehow.com/about_5336183_can-upgrade-laptop-cpu.html

If your laptop is slow, DEFINATELY upgrade your RAM. I would suggest to 2GB. First, check to see what the maximum RAM your notebook can support. Here are some additional things you can do to speed up your system:

Usually a hard drive and memory are upgraded on a laptop. I know at least you can upgrade the memory but upgrading the CPU is not recommended. If you go to Crucial’s web site, it will tell you exactly what your memory upgrade options are. http://www.crucial.com
