So where does it end and start getting good again? I mean:
Mobo MSI 785GM-E51 ($84)
AMD Phenom 925 ($144)
RAM Patriot PC3 12800 ($109)
Will my old HDD plug right in and work without dying or does it need to be registered online?
I have tallied up the cost of upgrades for one of my computers and $380 is w/out a new HDD and labor?

I would recommend getting the AMD Phenom II X4 940 for $159
and MSI 790X-G45 motherboard for $89
This processor is a black edition processor. And the motherboard is the latest AMD 790X chipset one with Crossfire support.
Atleast get this processor. Use your own motherboard.
And yes your HDD will plug in without any problem. Your HDD might be a SATA one IDE one. So that motherboard has both those ports. So you can obviously use your old HDD. But the think is with the OS. After this upgrade you will have to reformat your windows. As the Windows loaded presently on the HDD wont understand the change in hardware parts. So your computer wont start unti you format your C drive and install Windows again.

Your old harddrive will not work without a reinstall. It was originally installed with differant hardware and configurations. It will just boot for about 1 second and keep restarting. With that kind of money involved in upgrades i would say just cut your losses and buy a new Laptop , or do the reinstall, but your gonna loose everything on that H/D so back up your documents to dvd or whatever first. Buy the new L/T and the use Laplink to transfer all your files. It will also moove your programs and related files as. But i’m sure you probably still have all your install discs right ???
You can probably buy a new toshiba or whatever (no hp) with 3-4 gig of ram, 300gig H/D and decent duo or quad core processor for around $500
