9800GT – it’s clearly better.
Your motherboard has the power to handle even a GTX 280 – no problem here.

the 8800gt and 9800gt are based on the same g92 core. The 9800gt is basically a rebadged and updated 8800gt. But I’d still go for the 9800gt since it has newer features such as Physx and Hybrid Power. Also, it may also run cheaper than the 8800gt on some occasions.
